Full-Time Staff Firefighter
Application Process
Groveland Community Services District Fire Department (GCSD-FD) does not currently have any full-time staff positions available.
GCSD-FD candidates for Firefighter should be experienced, motivated, possess strong leadership skills, and be a productive team player. The Firefighter answers directly to the Fire Engineer and ultimately to the Fire Chief.
GCSD-FD is located in Tuolumne County along Highway 120, west of Yosemite National Park. The GCSD-FD provides fire and rescue service within 14.7 square miles, to a full-time population of 3,000 and a seasonal population of over 6,000. The GCSD-FD responded to 694 calls in 2009, of which 63% were medical aid calls, from one staffed station and two unmanned satellite stations.
The GCSD-FD is not currently seeking candidates but the ideal candidate would become a progressive team member. The Firefighter assists the Fire Engineer and provides ongoing training to career staff and paid call Volunteer Firefighters. The Firefighter works a 56 hour work week on a rotating 2 days on, 4 days off. The District offers an excellent benefit package that includes dental, vision, and medical benefits. The District also offers PERS retirement at 2% @ 50. The starting salary for the entry level firefighter position would be $2600 - $3000 a month DOE.
Definition
Under the general supervision of the Fire Engineer and Fire Chief, Firefighters perform firefighting and emergency service activities in protecting life and property, respond to fire and rescue emergency calls, perform routine station and equipment maintenance, and participate in training drills.
Required Experience/Licenses/Certifications
- Any combination of training, experience and course work, which would provide the required knowledge and abilities. Previous firefighting experience or training is highly desirable. The fire department uses all three levels in evaluating, placing and promoting an employee.
- Must possess good character traits in working in a team atmosphere.
- Possession of a valid and current California Class B Drivers license, as issued by the California Department of Motor Vehicles within one year of hire date.
- Must be certified by the State of California as a Firefighter 1.
- Must be currently certified as an EMT-1 (must meet the requirements of Title 22, California Code of Regulations)
- Must have a valid CPAT card at the time of testing (CPAT Preparation Guide).
Desirable Qualifications
- Possess a valid California Class B Drivers license.
- Possess a California State Fire Marshall Driver Operator 1A and1B certification.
- Possess California State Fire Marshall certifications in Low Angle Rope Rescue and Auto Extrication.
Testing Will Consist Of:
- Written Examination
- Oral Evaluation

Include the following with your application: copies of certifications; copies of driver's license, DMV medical card, CPR/AED card, and EMT 1 or First Responder card. Volunteer Firefighter Application Process
- On submission of the complete application packet (see below) to the Groveland Community Services District Fire Department (GCSD-FD) the Assistant Fire Chief will contact you.
- The Assistant Fire Chief will initiate a background check and will review all other aspects of your application packet.
- An oral interview will be conducted at GCSD-FD by the Assistant Fire Chief and/or the Training Officer.
- Upon successful completion of all the above mentioned steps, we will schedule a spirometry test and a physical by the GCSD-FD approved physician. These physical examinations will address your ability to perform the activities of a firefighter as well as meeting the requirements for a Class B driver's license.
- Following a successful physical examination and approval of the Fire Chief you will begin the safety and equipment orientation assigned by the GCSD-FD. You will then receive additional information and learn the polices related to emergency operations.
- Upon successful completion of all the above steps and completion of the Joint Basic Firefighter Academy you may be considered for a Firefighter Volunteer position with
- the Groveland Community Services District Fire Department.

Reserve Firefighter Application Process
The Groveland Community Services District Fire Department (GCSD-FD) is seeking candidates for Reserve Firefighter who are experienced, motivated, possess strong leadership skills, and will be a productive team player with all the staff of the Fire Department. The Reserve Firefighter will answer directly to the Fire Engineer and ultimately to the Fire Chief. The Reserve Firefighter will assist the Fire Engineer with ongoing training to career staff and volunteer firefighters. The Reserve Firefighter will work two to three 24 hour shifts per month at $200 per 24 hour shift.

The GCSD-FD provides fire and rescue service within 14.7 square miles, to a full-time population of 3,000 and a seasonal population of over 6,000. Under the general supervision of the Fire Engineer and Fire Chief, the Reserve Firefighter will perform firefighting and emergency services activities in protecting life and property, respond to fire and rescue emergency calls, lay hose line and perform fire suppression functions, assist with the operation of fire and emergency equipment, perform routine station and equipment maintenance, participate in training drills, learn fire department rules and regulations and develop knowledge of fire hazards, firefighting techniques and emergency procedures.

Typical Physical Requirements
Reserve Firefighters must be able to: sit for extended periods of time; frequently stand and walk; carry, push, pull and lift equipment and parts weighting up to 50 pounds; maintain stamina during period of unusual physical exertion; must be able to crawl, stoop, climb, and bend in a variety of circumstances and have excellent manual dexterity and eye-hand coordination. Reserve Firefighters must have corrected hearing and vision to normal range.
Other requirements would be: good verbal communication; proficiency in the use of office equipment including computers, telephones, calculators, copiers, and facsimile (FAX) machine.
Typical Working Conditions
Normal work is usually performed in an office. Emergency situations may occur in a structure, vehicle, or in an outdoor environment working under a variety of weather conditions including exposure to unusual ranges of temperature, exposure to smoke, fumes, and gasses; exposure to solvents and chemicals; and exposure to unusual amounts of moisture and water. A Firefighter works around a variety of fire suppression equipment; responds to emergencies during unusual hours and times and is in continual contact with other staff and the public.
Employment Standards
- Knowledge of:
- Basic methods, principles, and practices of fire suppression
- Local geography, including roads and landmarks.

- Understand and act in accordance with Department policy, rules, and regulations
- Demonstrate mechanical aptitude for the operation of fire and emergency service equipment.
- Understand and have a working knowledge of accepted fire fighting suppression tactics and practices, and have the ability to apply them in an emergency situation.
- Think clearly and act quickly and calmly in emergency situations.
- Learn and apply firefighting and emergency service methods and techniques in a variety of situations.
- Drive fire and emergency response equipment safely, in accordance with traffic rules and regulations.
- Meet established standards of physical endurance and agility.
- Maintain stations, equipment, and grounds in a clean and orderly condition.
- Deal tactfully and courteously with the public.
- Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships.
Required Experience/Licenses/Certifications
- Must be certified by the State of California as a Firefighter 1 or have graduated through an approved Basic Firefighter Academy.
- At a minimum be currently certified as a First Responder, but preferably be certified as an EMT-1.
